Dementia: vascular

Vascular dementia is caused by reduced blood flow to the brain. It’s estimated to affect around 150,000 people in the UK.

Symptoms of vascular dementia include:

  • slowness of thought
  • problems with concentration
  • difficulty with planning and understanding
  • changes to your mood, personality, or behaviour
  • difficulty walking and keeping balance
  • feeling disoriented and confused
  • problems with memory and language

Although there is no cure for vascular dementia, it is possible to reduce the speed at which brain cells are lost. This can be done by:

  • eating a healthy, balanced diet
  • stopping smoking
  • maintaining a healthy weight
  • increasing exercise
  • cutting out or reducing intake of alcohol
  • taking medicines, such as those used to treat high blood pressure, lower cholesterol, or prevent blood clots.
