A message from our care home manager

Pat Laing scaled

Caring for others has been at the heart of my life for more than 45 years. I started my career as a care assistant and, over the years, progressed through a variety of roles before becoming a Home Manager in 1995. Along the way, I’ve had the privilege of supporting people living with dementia, nursing needs, learning disabilities and age-related frailty.

After joining Greensleeves Care in 2015, I spent several happy years at Sharnbrook House before moving to Tickford Abbey in 2021. From the moment I arrived, I knew this was a very special home.

What I love most about Tickford Abbey is the warm, family atmosphere. Our residents, relatives and team members all play an important part in creating a caring and supportive community. I am incredibly proud of our long-serving and dedicated staff, who go above and beyond every day to help residents feel safe, valued and truly at home.

I look forward to welcoming you to Tickford Abbey and showing you what makes our home so special.

Can I arrange a trial or respite stay?

We provide short-term respite care for residents who need extra support after illness, an operation or a change in routine. A stay includes personalised care, home-cooked meals, activities, comfortable accommodation and time to settle into the home. We also offer a 6-week flexible trial period, giving residents the opportunity to experience daily life, meet the team and feel reassured before making a longer-term decision.

How is the transition into care supported?

We take the time to make each move into the home feel gentle, personal, and well-supported. Before a resident joins us, we get to know their care needs, routines, preferences and interests, then create a personalised care plan. Our stable team helps with settling in, building familiar relationships and making each bedroom feel comfortable. The first days are handled with patience, kindness and close attention to emotional wellbeing.

How do you care for residents living with dementia?

We provide specialist dementia care in a safe, supportive, and specially dedicated area of the home. Our trained team uses calm routines, familiar surroundings, and person-centred support for residents living with dementia. Care is shaped around life history, personal preferences, communication needs, and daily comfort. Can residents personalise their bedrooms?

Residents are encouraged to make their bedrooms feel familiar, comfortable, and personal. We have 32 spacious bedrooms, including single rooms, companion rooms, and en-suite wetroom options. Own furniture can be brought where suitable, along with photos, ornaments, and personal belongings that help the room feel like home. Phone points, television points, and residents’ internet access also support comfort, independence, and connection.

What happens if my funds run out?

Through our Home for Life funding assurance, we aim to support residents in continuing to live at Tickford Abbey if their personal funds run out. As a not-for-profit care home, our focus is on care, comfort and long-term reassurance rather than shareholders. Each situation is handled with sensitivity and respect, with clear communication and support so residents can feel secure in the place they call home.

Ratings &
accreditations

I spent 2 weeks here in respite care. The home was well staffed and the staff were well trained. Many residents had dementia and the staff were caring, compassionate and patient. It is a happy and supportive home, with attention given to well being and individual needs. The managers were very involved in day to day caring, as were the chefs, the maintenance staff and ancillary staff. Everyone contributed to the well being and support of residents and their many needs. I have no hesitation in recommending Tickford Abbey, particularly for those with complex needs.
