Speirs House, a Greensleeves Care home with nursing in New Malden, welcomed the local community with open arms for its Family Fun Day on Saturday 16th July.

The event was free and open to all, with a BBQ, drinks, professional entertainment, and games for people of all ages.

Residents and colleagues at Speirs House have a long-standing connection with the local area and were thrilled to be able to welcome local friends and family back to the home’s beautiful gardens after the uncertainty of the pandemic.

The local Vicar, Stephen Kuhrt, welcomed guests to the event and gave a talk on Speirs House’s interesting history. The home was owned by Marguerite Speirs, whose mother, Marian, was the first Mayoress of New Malden.

Marguerite lived in the home all her life, and in her older age, she chose to establish it as a care home for older people in the local community. Marguerite was therefore the first resident of Speirs House, which now offers support for up to thirty-six residents.

Vicar Stephen Kuhrt said:

“We owe a lot to the people who established Speirs House, this fantastic home that has cared for so many people over the years.”

The event also involved an awards ceremony, with residents presenting members of staff with awards to show their appreciation for their hard work in recent years, and always!

Interim Support Manager, Feruna O’Donovan, said:

“We had such a wonderful day with our friends, family, and neighbours. Speirs House has such a rich history within the local area, so it is important to us that we honour this history through making lasting connections with our local community. Our residents love to be a part of their community, as many have lived in the area all their lives, so events like this help us to strengthen these relations.”

As restrictions continue to ease, Speirs House is planning more events for the local community.
