A dedicated volunteer at The Orchards, the leading non-profit care home in Ely, has raised vital funds for dementia research by bravely shaving her head in support of a cause close to her heart.

Michelle George, who has supported the Ely care home community for around four years, raised an incredible £457 through the inspiring fundraising challenge. Michelle first became involved with The Orchards by attending church services there before officially joining the team as a volunteer 18 months ago.

Michelle chose to shave her hair in honour of her mother, who lived with Alzheimer’s disease, and in recognition of the many residents at The Orchards who are living with dementia.

“I really wanted to do this for my Mum, and my hope is the money raised will help support vital research into treatment and a cure, while also providing meaningful support for individuals and families affected by dementia,” says Michelle.

The team at The Orchards has expressed deep admiration for Michelle’s courage and commitment to the community.

“Michelle’s commitment to our community has always been clear, and this fundraising effort truly reflects her dedication and compassion. We are incredibly proud of her for taking on such a brave challenge for a cause that means so much to so many of our residents and their families,” said Alastair Rayner, Home Manager at The Orchards.

The emotional event was made even more special thanks to Rachel, the care home’s in-house hairdresser, who kindly came in on her day off to shave Michelle’s hair free of charge.

The fundraiser took place during Dementia Awareness Week, with all proceeds going to the Alzheimer’s Society. With 1 in 3 people born in the UK today expected to develop dementia during their lifetime, at The Orchards, raising awareness, supporting families, and funding research has never been more important.
