Green thumbs at Harleston House

Harleston House

Residents of Harleston House, a Greensleeves Care home in Lowestoft, have been transforming the home’s garden in time for summer and are hoping to be recognised in two local competitions.

Jean, George, Vera and Margaret are leading the gardening team, along with Patsy, whose late husband was a resident at Harleston House. Although not a resident herself, Patsy became very close with the residents and staff and has continued to maintain her friendship with the home by getting involved in the gardening project.

Patsy said that the gardening project has given her a sense of purpose and focus during a difficult time and that she loves being involved.

Activities Co-ordinator, Gareth Harding, said:

“The aim is to encourage residents to get outdoors and to be at one with nature, as well as to provide a project for the spring and summer seasons.”

Harleston House achieved two Silver Awards in last year’s Lowestoft in Bloom competition, in both the ‘standing container’ and ‘best garden display’ categories and the team of resident gardeners are attempting to come back for gold this year!

Harleston House has also entered Anglia in Bloom 2022 and the team are looking forward to the judging days for both events in July.

Gareth continued:

“All residents are encouraged to join in with the gardening project regardless of ability- it is the residents’ garden and therefore should be a communal project.”
