As part of Dementia Awareness Week (15-21 May), Gloucester House nursing home in Sevenoaks invited firefighters from Sevenoaks Fire Station, Kent Fire and Rescue Service to join the staff team to take part in a Virtual Dementia Tour.
The Tour is medically and scientifically proven to be the closest experience of what dementia might be like that we can give a person with a healthy brain. By understanding dementia from the person’s point of view we can change practice, reduce issues and improve their lives.
Home Manager of Gloucester House, Sally Rochester said: “We have developed a good relationship with the local fire crew and they have supported the home during the last year, providing advice, befriending residents and bringing in wonderful carrot cakes. Firefighters often come across people living with a dementia in their line of work and have found the training and their involvement with Gloucester House extremely useful in understanding how they can support people living with dementia.”
