A resident at Buckler’s Lodge Care Home in Crowthorne has been crowned Senior King of the annual Crowthorne Carnival, one of the village’s most cherished community events.

Richard Eldon, 81, a former bioscientist from Bradford who has lived at Buckler’s Lodge since 2024, was selected for the honour by the Crowthorne Carnival Committee.

The role called for someone “who enjoys chatting to people and having a laugh”, making Richard the ideal choice. He was joined in the carnival procession by Senior Queen Nicky Bevan.

Local children also took on Junior Royal roles, with Princess Sophie and Prince Finley joining the procession and helping to present prizes during the day.

This year’s carnival theme was Planet Earth. The colourful procession made its way from Wellington College to Morgan Recreation Ground, where floats were judged by local dignitaries before prizes were awarded. The annual Crowthorne Fete also took place, with a wide variety of stalls, entertainment and attractions for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Commenting on the honour, Richard said:

“I was delighted to be asked to be Senior King of Crowthorne Carnival. It was an amazing day, and I loved waving at everyone’s smiling faces and being part of this fantastic local tradition. I moved to Buckler’s Lodge to be near my son, and it really feels like home. Now I feel truly part of the Crowthorne community too. I am grateful to the home for putting me forward and to the organisers for choosing me.”

Juliet Gallop, Home Manager at Buckler’s Lodge, the leading not-for-profit care home in Bracknell Forest run by charity Greensleeves Care, said:

“Seeing our residents playing such an active role in the local community is wonderful. Experiences like this are so important for wellbeing, confidence and social connection, and they demonstrate that life in a care home can be active, fulfilling and full of meaningful opportunities.

“Our team is dedicated to ensuring every resident has the chance to enjoy activities, entertainment and community experiences that reflect their interests and help them stay connected with the world around them.”
