Borovere, a residential care home in Alton, was crowned one of the 20 national winners of a Novelty 90th Birthday Cake Challenge which was run by Unilever Food Solutions. This challenge was designed to commemorate the Queen’s 90th birthday.

Following a win of Unilever’s Gingerbread House competition, Borovere decided to enter the Novelty 90th Birthday Cake Challenge. The residents opted for a birthday picnic theme, including a cake in the form of a table and an icing figurine of the Queen as a guest of honour! As the Queen shouldn’t celebrate on her own, the residents made a whole entourage of guests to keep her company. The picnic table, covered in iced table cloth, was adorned with sandwiches, biscuits and flowers.

Meg Hilton, Activity Coordinator at Borovere, said: “We are all incredibly pleased at being placed in the Top 20 again and are excited that a photo of our cake will be featured in the Unilever’s commemorative book Art of Care Home Baking.”

James Gunner, a resident, said: “I couldn’t turn down the competition! I enjoyed making the cake even though making the decorations was a bit difficult as I hadn’t done anything like that before.”
